How to help this Christmas

  1. Make a financial donation!

The best thing you can do this Christmas is make a financial donation!

A question we get asked a lot is “should we give money to rough sleepers?” This is a difficult question to answer, because it’s impossible to know the individual circumstances of every person on the street. ‘The homeless’ are not a homogenous group.  They are individuals, with individual needs and wants. It’s not as simple as saying “don’t give money to rough sleepers because they’ll spend it on drugs”. The majority of those rough sleeping don’t have a substance misuse problem. There are many reasons why we advise people not to give cash to rough sleepers not least of which is that it can make the recipient a target for theft or might be used to buy harmful substances…

Instead, we would always encourage people to give their money to registered homelessness charities like WCHP. We will put the money towards making sustainable and lasting changes for individuals and towards our work to end homelessness in the longer term.

We cannot stress enough that donating money is the best way to help our clients. Financial donations give us the flexibility to spend funds on the things that are needed most. It allows us to pay for the upkeep on the buildings that house our projects and clients, to pay the salaries of our staff, to buy resources and ensures the sustainable continuation of our work that helps over 1,100 people every year!

There are a number of way you can make a donation click here for the low down.

  1. Make a donation on someone else's behalf

Every year we have a Christmas Catalogue, that you can use to chose a ‘gift’ for a loved one this Christmas. With a gift of £15, for example, you can provide someone rough sleeping with a breakfast for a week, or for £52 you can pay for one night at our Recovery Project for someone struggling with substance misuse.

The Christmas Catalogue also has updates on our services in Worthing, Littlehampton and Horsham and a very moving story from Carl, one of our clients, who describes his personal experiences of past, present and future Christmas.

Click here to see our Christmas Catalogue, drop us a line to info@wchp.org.uk or phone us on: 01903 680740 and we will get one posted out to you.

  1. Run your own event

There are loads of fun events and activities you can do at home, work or school to raise funds and awareness for WCHP! Here are a few:

  • Christmas Jumper Day - everyone one in the office donates a pound and wears a Christmas jumper to work. You could also do a woolly hat day.
  • Reverse advent calendar - for every day of advent put something into a box and donate it to us at the end of month. This a great idea for families, work colleagues and other groups who want to give something back this Christmas. For suggested items for the advent calendar see our Wish List.
  • Cake sale - you can never go wrong with a cake sale!
  • Christmas craft sale - are you running a craft stall this Christmas? Why not donate a portion of the money you raise to WCHP.
  1. Donate something from our Christmas Wish List

Every year we compile a Wish List of items we need to make Christmas a special day for everyone in our services. This includes food items for Christmas dinner and presents for our clients. Additionally if you would like to contribute fresh items for Christmas dinner you can purchase vouchers for us from supermarkets.

  1. Volunteering

Each year we are very fortunate to have many volunteers helping us on Christmas day. They bring the festive spirit to our projects and make our clients feel at home! This year our rotas are full for Christmas day. However, we need urgent help at our Christmas Collections.  Each year we hold collections at supermarkets and shopping centres locally and we can make up to £1,000 in one day! It’s a great way to raise awareness and funds at what can be a very difficult time of year for many of our clients. We need your help! We are looking for collectors and carol singers for the dates below. If you are able to help even for an hour, give us a ring on 01903 680740 ext 242 or email info@wchp.org.uk.
